Healthy Kids are Happy Kids!

And healthy kids need physical activity  

Our students need your help!  In August 2007, the Della Davidson Elementary School opened its doors to 475 4th and 5th graders from our community. Seven years later, Della now houses 680 3rd and 4th graders and our student population continues to grow. Our kids need a better playground. They need a playground they can be excited about spending their play time. The current equipment is not sufficient for the growing number of students in our school.  Our goal is to raise $30,000 by December 19, 2014 for the DDES Playground Project.

We need to expand and enhance our playground so our students can obtain the physical activity that is so important to their health and well-being. A study done by Georgia Health Sciences University showed the effects of physical activity on learning not only increased test scores, but also improved a student’s ability to concentrate and work for longer periods of time without interruption.  Additional benefits included significantly improved student attendance, and an impressive 67% drop in disciplinary problems.

We know renovating a playground can be expensive and wanted to ensure we would be creating something the children would be excited about, so we asked the children what they would like. Some of the children's wish list items include:

• Soccer Field
• Swirling Slide, Tall Slide, 'Super' Slide
• Better swings, Tire Swings
• Monkey Bars
• Playhouse
• Balance beam
• Shade (pavilion, trees)
• Tether Ball
• Four Square Grid
• Track
• Shade, Grass, Flowers
• See Saw
• Dodge ball court
• Merry go-round
• Stage
• Equipment (Balls, Frisbees, etc)

One of the most requested additions was a soccer field and some type of pavilion for hot days. Della has a fair amount of space for expansion. 

We were surprised to hear that 8 and 9 year olds had requested 'grass and trees,' but we see why.  

Hard to see so many children not playing and being active during their recess period. Our students need to have access to age appropriate physical activity on a daily basis.
